LabSD, Inc., a Korean startup, is making waves in global healthcare by introducing the innovative EYELIKE™ Platform. Founded in 2017 as a spin-off of Project BOM affiliated with Yonsei University Health System, LabSD’s mission is to break down barriers to quality healthcare services, particularly in resource-limited regions where access to eye health services is a pressing concern.

Approximately 253 million people worldwide suffer from blindness or visual impairment, with a staggering 89% residing in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). LabSD’s EYELIKE™ Platform, a comprehensive community eye health solution, is poised to make a profound impact by addressing this critical issue.

EYELIKE Platform: A Game-Changer in Eye Healthcare

LabSD’s EYELIKE Platform is a portable, user-friendly digital ophthalmoscope that can be seamlessly attached to upcycled smartphones. This technology empowers existing healthcare professionals within communities to efficiently conduct retinal screenings. Notably, the platform includes an Artificial Intelligence-based Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) designed to provide valuable insights into patient conditions, which is currently in development.

The EYELIKE Platform significantly enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of eye health programs and projects in resource-limited conditions. It allows health professionals with minimal training to conduct screenings for eye diseases such as Diabetes Retinopathy (DR), Glaucoma, or Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) at an international standard. This task-shifting approach empowers community-level health practitioners to take on roles traditionally reserved for ophthalmologists.

Global Impact and Collaboration

LabSD has teamed up with the Samsung Galaxy Upcycling Program to repurpose older flagship smartphones that would otherwise contribute to environmental issues. By integrating essential functions of conventional ocular imaging devices into these upcycled smartphones, LabSD promotes healthcare and reduces electronic waste, aligning with the global effort to combat climate change.

LabSD, Inc. has already made significant strides in its mission. The EYELIKE Platform has been piloted in five different countries, with legal entities established in India and Vietnam. Medical device approval has been obtained in South Korea and Vietnam, validating the platform’s effectiveness and safety. LabSD has partnered with 12 client organizations, screened over 35,000 people, and collected and labeled an impressive 87,000 retinal images.

LabSD, Inc. is on a mission to contribute to global efforts to prevent blindness and promote eye health in resource-limited conditions. It aims for collaborations with like-minded organizations that share their vision of a world where quality healthcare knows no boundaries.
