Leveraging Technology To Improve Healthcare

Author, Hitesh Dev is the COO at Devout Corporation and a health tech consultant supporting Federal and Commercial organizations since 2002.

Denis Waitley is believed to have said, “Time and health are two precious assets that we don’t recognize and appreciate until they have been depleted.” And in today’s fast-paced world, managing time and health are extremely important as these are the assets that make or break our lives.

Further, by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) tools and new technology, healthcare companies can automate mundane tasks, leverage personalized health insights and also improve patients’ quality of life.

Depleting Assets: Time And Health

We do not realize that some of these tools are already part and parcel of our daily lives. For example, Outlook and Google excel in managing calendars, setting reminders and automating routine emails/tasks. Apple’s Siri offers seamless integration with iOS devices, making it perfect for similar functions. You can leverage AI tools like ChatGPT for getting ready for your meetings, summarizing documents and cutting down the hours spent on research. Your co-workers can also get task notifications and reminders as needed.

Modern technology has also brought us a plethora of AI-powered tools that offer personalized health monitoring and management, making it easier to take care of our well-being. Who doesn’t use Fitbit and Apple Watch these days? These tools ask us to take 10,000 steps a day and stand up frequently, and also remind us to drink water.

AI’s role also extends into more specialized health care and long-term management, particularly for chronic conditions or the aging population. Some of the ways healthcare companies are leveraging AI is by automating tasks such as medical image analysis, diagnosis and treatment planning. Natural language processing is also being used to extract valuable information from unstructured clinical notes and research literature.

Overcoming The Challenges Of New Technology In The Healthcare Industry

Implementing new technologies can bring numerous benefits, but it also comes with its own set of challenges and pitfalls. Implementing technology without clearly defined goals can lead to ineffective outcomes and wasted resources. Is the goal to improve patient outcomes or reduce costs, or both?

Inefficient user training can also hinder the successful adoption of new technologies. It’s essential to provide comprehensive training to all user personas in order to change the culture and utilization of the new system.

Some of the other areas that are important to keep in mind are integration with existing systems and incorporating a feedback loop. In my experience, using a scaled agile framework (SAFe) can help to build a culture of continuous improvement. Also, involving solution architects throughout the project can help ensure that all the existing systems are integrated with newer technologies. (Disclosure: My company helps with this, as do others.)

Finally, data security and privacy are at the forefront of many recent news stories. Failure to implement adequate security measures can lead to data breaches, regulatory violations and damage to reputation. It’s essential to prioritize data security from the outset—and compliance with regulations such as HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation).

I think the integration of AI in the health industry underscores a transformative shift toward proactive and personalized healthcare. By leveraging these technologies, companies can engage in more preventative care and provide tailored support for long-term well-being. Also, by using the right time and productivity management tools, professionals can get their time back!
